Chamber, Parks Department Seek Vendors and Parade Entries for 29th McAllen Candlelight Posada.

MCALLEN, TX—The McAllen Chamber of Commerce and the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department are looking for vendors and parade entries for the 29th McAllen Candlelight Posada, December 2nd and 3rd, at Archer Park.  Organizations interested in participating as food vendors or who would like to enter an entry in the lighted parade can pick up applications at the McAllen Chamber of Commerce or download the application on www.mcallen.net

“The Candlelight Posada committee is very excited about this year’s event.  We hope to make this year as festive and memorable as the last,” said Eduardo De La Rosa, Candlelight Posada Chairman.  “We want to invite the community to participate as food vendors and/or in the lighted parade.  This is a great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for businesses and organizations.”

Candlelight Posada has been very successful in previous years because of the financial support from local businesses.

“Sponsorship opportunities are also available for both individuals and businesses who would like to show their support for this community event,” said De La Rosa.  “Last year, Candlelight Posada attracted over 38,000 people from around the community.  This is a great opportunity for businesses to show their support and promote their business as well,” said De La Rosa.

The event kicks off with a lighted Christmas parade on Main Street and the lighting of the Mayor’s Christmas tree on Friday night and continues throughout the evening with plenty of entertainment for the entire family.  Teen Town and Little Town are big attractions for teens and small children with plenty of games and activities.

On Saturday night, the community joins in singing along with the nativity procession of the re-enactment of Mary & Joseph seeking shelter.  Musical entertainment will follow throughout the evening for the entire family.

Honoring Our Soldiers Who Have Served

McALLEN - Veterans Day allows us to honor the courage and valor of our servicemen and women, and to remember those veterans who have selflessly sacrificed their lives. Annually observed on November 11, Veterans Day honors our military veterans across the country who have dedicated their lives to securing our freedom.

Historically, it commemorates the end of World War I where major hostilities were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.  In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11th as Veterans Day, and called upon Americans  to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.

"Veterans Day is intended to thank and honor all those who have served honorably in the military, in wartime or peacetime." Rep. Veronica Gonzales stated.  "We must never forget the selfless service and sacrifice that these men and women and their families make to preserve peace and democracy in our country."

Knowing that freedom is not free, we especially salute the fallen soldiers who have given their lives as the ultimate sacrifice so that we may enjoy our liberties.  The Rio Grande Valley keeps the memory and legacy of our loved ones alive in the hearts of our families and it is with lasting gratitude that we honor the following fallen soldiers of Hidalgo County.

Honoring Our Military Veterans

Congressman Hinojosa discusses Veterans issues with Rio Grande Valley Veterans

Every Veterans Day, Americans come together to remember those who have served our country around the world in the name of freedom and democracy.  The debt that we owe to them is immeasurable.  Their sacrifices and those of their families are freedom’s foundation.  Without the brave efforts of all the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and Coast Guardsmen and their families, our country would not live so freely

On this Veterans Day, we continue to have combat troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  The President is keeping his commitment to end the American war in Iraq in a responsible way with the recent announcement of the drawdown of U.S. forces to zero in Iraq by the end of this year.

This honors the remarkable sacrifice and service of our men and women in uniform over the last eight years, while giving Iraq the best opportunity to build a prosperous and democratic future.

Today is a day to honor the memory of the more than 4,400 Americans who have died in Iraq and more than 1,800 who have died in Afghanistan.  We also honor the sacrifices of our wounded:  32,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and 14,600 in Afghanistan.

We all know that the people of South Texas are deeply patriotic and we have lost many of our sons and daughters to these conflicts as well as the conflicts of the past centuries.  Just a few weeks ago I joined many of you as we mourned the loss of two outstanding young men, Sgt. Rudy Rodriguez, Jr. and Staff Sgt. Estevan Altamirano. Their families continue to need our prayers, our support and our promise that their loved ones will not be forgotten.

Now, more than ever, we renew our commitment to keep our promises to the nation’s more than 2 million troops and reservists, their families, and 23 million veterans, including the thousands who call Deep South Texas home.

As part of keeping our promises to our veterans, the President and Democrats in Congress are focused on taking major steps to help our men and women in uniform obtain good jobs when they come home.

With one-in-five young veterans between the ages of 18 and 24 returning from Iraq and Afghanistan looking for work, we have an obligation to make sure they have the necessary tools to navigate this difficult labor market and succeed in the civilian workforce. We support the American Jobs Act and the Hiring Heroes Act to:

  •      provide tax credits for hiring veterans looking for work,
  •        strengthen much-needed training programs for separating service members,
  •     encourage businesses and government contractors to hire the brave men and women who have developed valuable skills and professionalism while in the armed forces, and
  •       ensure that service members leave the military career-ready.

From 2007 through 2010, the Congress made historic gains for America’s troops, veterans and military families.  We passed bills that affected nearly every veteran in America.  I continue to fight to preserve and build on this record.  Just last week we approved a 3.6% cost of living raise for our veterans.  From 2007 to 2010 Congress:

  • Enacted the new Post 9-11 GI Bill to restore the promise of a full, four-year college education, that has already allowed over 600,000 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars to afford college, just like after World War II, along with tax incentives for hiring to expand job opportunities for returning soldiers.
  • According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, this strengthened health care for more than 5 million veterans, with a historic commitment -- including the largest single increase in the history of the VA -- for more doctors and nurses, better access for rural veterans, and expanded efforts to treat the signature injuries of the war, PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury, while enacting a law to guarantee timely and predictable funding for veterans’ health care and to address the health care needs of our nearly 2 million female veterans.
  • Provided troops and veterans the benefits they have earned and resources they need, giving troops a pay raise, restoring military readiness, providing the best training and equipment for the men and women serving in our Armed Forces, taking steps to reduce the backlog and wait for veterans trying to access their earned benefits, providing special payments for service members and veterans who were forced to serve under stop-loss orders since 2001, and making headway in ending the Disabled Veterans Tax and the Military Families’ Tax.

November is Military Family Appreciation Month, this month, and every month, we should all take the time to help support the families whose loved ones are fighting to keep our nation free.  In Congress, we strengthened support for military families, building more military child care centers and better military family housing, and enacting landmark legislation to provide much-needed support for family members and other caregivers for wounded veterans. These military families are our heroes too, and we must cointinue to support them.

On the battlefield, the military pledges to leave no soldier behind.

As a nation, let it be our pledge that when they return home, we leave no veteran behind.  This day and every day, let us honor their service with actions that fulfill our commitment to our troops, their families, and our veterans and that are worthy of our grateful nation.

Creating Jobs in Deep South Texas

Dear Friends,

On Tuesday, November 8, 2011, from 9:30 a.m.-3:30p.m., the Economic Resource & Career Fair 2011 will take place at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Over 75 employers, 33 agencies and groups from the Rio Grande Valley will have over 2,400 available positions to offer those who are seeking employment. Registration is free.

In the past, Job Fairs have put hundreds of job seekers to work. This year, our country is faced with a long and tough battle of trying to work itself out of the deep economic trenches that were dug during the past decade. It has been, and will continue to be, a hard battle to get our nation back on track. But the important thing to remember is that we are on the right track.

One of the ways to overcome our economic situation is to create jobs. President Obama unveiled his American Jobs Act which incorporates bipartisan ideas, and does not add a dime to the deficit.  Senate Democrats have put forward the Rebuild America Jobs Act which contains many of the same essential elements at the President’s plan.

This is about creating jobs and many of them involve important and necessary infrastructure improvements.  Many Americans agree that putting construction workers back on the job to rebuild our roads, bridges, railway, airports, and energy and water infrastructure is a priority that will strengthen our nation’s economy and our middle class.

  • Clickhere for a new report from the White House highlighting the economic benefits of rebuilding our roads, bridges, railways, and airports across the nation.
  • Click here for a fact sheet from Senate Democrats on the Rebuild America Jobs Act.

The continued attempts by the other side of the aisle to set up roadblocks to prevent job creation and economic growth must end.  Americans need jobs and they want results now. This is why we must be proactive and this is why my office in conjunction with other agencies and companies have vigorously combined our efforts to put job seekers and employers together. Our communities and our businesses will benefit from a trained and skilled workforce our area provides. Deep South Texas’ workforce has a strong work ethic. They are ready, willing and able to work. We must keep on working towards our goal and support legislative measures that will create jobs and keep our economy growing strong.

Sincerely,

Ruben Hinojosa
Member of Congress
