REP. GONZALES ANNOUNCES ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL SALES TAX HOLIDAY THIS WEEKEND

MCALLEN-- State Rep. Veronica Gonzales reminds Texas families to take advantage of the annual Sales Tax Holiday this weekend, August 20 through 22, that waives state and local sales taxes for back-to-school items such as clothes, shoes and school supplies.

"School supplies can really add up and at a time when everyone is watching their dollars, taking advantage of the sales tax weekend helps Texas families save money," Gonzales said. "Texas lawmakers added school supplies to the holiday in 2009, so that families can stretch their dollars farther when back-to-school shopping."

Shoppers will not have to pay state and local sales tax on clothing, shoes, backpacks and many school supplies costing under $100 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Items not taxed this weekend include baby clothes, belts, hats, diapers, uniforms, suits and shoes, as well as school supplies such as calculators, lunch boxes, pens, pencils, folders and paper. Texas shoppers are predicted to save $59.3 million during the tax-free holiday weekend.

A complete list of tax-free items as well as more information  can be found at : http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html.
