Construction Kick-Off Event: New McAllen Public Library

The City of McAllen will host a news conference to announce the start of construction on the new main library, being built on the site of the old Walmart building, on the northwest corner of Nolana Avenue and 23rd Street, on Thursday, June 10, at 10 am.

The 27 million dollar project, designed by McAllen based Boultinghouse Simpson Architects and Minneapolis based MS&R, is expected to be completed by the summer of 2011.

The 123,000 square foot building will include:

  • Children, teen and adult study areas
  • Quiet Study Room
  • Study Rooms
  • Computer Lab
  • Genealogy Research Area
  • Multi-purpose Rooms
  • Conference Rooms
  • Café
  • Auditorium
  • Skylights

Project plans also include a complete makeover to the exterior of the building as well as parking lot and landscaping improvements.
