Cancer is indiscriminate and knows no boundaries! And, it only takes one person to make a difference. Nowhere is that more evident than with the American Cancer Society’s most high-profile charitable event ‘The Cattle Baron’s Ball’. Fortunately, we have FOUR community leaders (all ‘Mayors’), that cover the North, South, East and West sides of Hidalgo County. Local Mayors, who are truly committed to defying boundaries, and pushing for a cure, and each one has a story that justifiably highlights the magnitude of defeating this disease.
Mayor Richard Garcia, to the North, in Edinburg lost his first wife to cancer. Together they fought the lethal disease for 15-years, living each day to the fullest. Mayor Richard Cortez, to the East, in McAllen is a prostate cancer survivor and Norberto Salinas, Mayor of Mission, represents the Western boundary as his wife ‘Yvonne’ is a cervical cancer survivor. Mayor John David Franz, represents the Southern portion of Hidalgo County, in the City of Hidalgo. He can certainly relate to the anguish as he has been exposed to several family members that have been diagnosed with the Cancer and recently lost an aunt.
As you take time to remember, those who have walked alongside others battling cancer, it’s also an ideal time to plan on attending the ‘Cattle Baron’s Ball’. It gives everyone in communities across the Valley a chance to commemorate lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. This year’s Chair, Alida Hernandez; wants funds ‘earmarked’ to stay right here in the RGV to assist families in need of transportation to and from treatment. So, let’s do it!
The largest shindig just north of the Mexico Border will be filled with gourmet grub, gaming, dancing and live entertainment. A climax of the evening will be the live and silent auctions. Specialty items such as concerts, hunting packages, original art and various sports memorabilia will be the focus of the live auction, while the silent auction will consist of mini getaways, fine dining and jewels. Raising much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer is what it’s all about. Thanks to the ‘Cattle Baron’s Ball’, the American Cancer Society continues to save lives right here in the Rio Grande Valley.
Many volunteers and sponsors have already seized the bull by its horns and committed to making this year’s ‘Cattle Barons' Ball’, the number one charity gala. These individuals give their time, love, and support to friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers who face cancer. “We anticipate a sell-out of ‘Back in the Saddle Again’ tickets prior to the event, so encourage your group to buy tickets as soon as possible”; said Alida Hernandez, this year’s Chair. ‘Back in the Saddle Again’ will take place on Friday, June 25th from 7pm to midnight at La Antigua Revilla, located at 4101 West University Drive in Edinburg.
