Spanking New Park for McAllen

McAllen Parks and Recreation Department to Host Groundbreaking Ceremony for The Crossings Park
McAllen, Texas (November 12, 2009) – The City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department announced they will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony for The Crossings Park located at 2601 Arroyo Avenue this Saturday, November 14th, 2009 at 10:00 am.
The Crossings Park will be the City’s first park to feature the industry’s newest pneumatic fitness equipment. An upgrade from the traditional stationary fitness equipment featured at most City parks; the new fitness equipment will include stations for abdominal crunches, pull-ups, chest press, squat press and stair stepper stations.
“We are always looking to find ways to improve our new parks,” said Mike Hernandez, Interim Director of the McAllen Parks & Recreation Department. “The new fitness equipment will offer residents the opportunity to complete a full body workout while enjoying all the benefits that come from exercising outdoors.”
This park will also be the City’s first park to receive a new style of playground equipment that features an open play concept combined with the more traditional playground equipment.
Included in the playground will be a newly designed raised platform and ramp that will better incorporate children of limited mobility into the overall play experience. All playground equipment will also be installed over rubber safety surfacing.
The plans for The Crossings Park also include traditional features such as shade structures, a half-basketball court and a walking trail.
The park’s landscape will consist of a wide variety of native plants including live oaks, mesquite, cedar elms, sabal palms and a host of others. All mulch and compost needed for landscaping will be provided by the City of McAllen Public Works Department.
The Crossings Park represents another successful collaboration between the City of McAllen Parks and Recreation Department design staff and City of McAllen Engineering Department. The project was designed completely in-house by the City of McAllen staff.
Total construction costs are estimated at approximately $950,000. Funding was provided by the City of McAllen.
The Crossings Park completion date is expected for the spring of 2010.
