Weatherization Assistance Program Available In McAllen

The Community Action Corporation of South Texas (CACOST), in partnership with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) is now accepting applications for the Weatherization Assistance Program for residents of the City of McAllen. These funds are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) weatherization assistance program to improve energy efficiency for low-income households.

(THIS IS NOT A HOME REPAIR PROGRAM)

If you are a McAllen resident and meet eligibility requirements, we can help. For additional information and Program Eligibility, please Contact the CACOST Weatherization Assistance Office, at (956) 631-0603.

Their office is located at 2522 Buddy Owens in McAllen.

Assistance as per funding availability. This is not an automatic assistance program.

IMAS, BMP Radio Host Back to School Bash Saturday

McAllen - Celebrate the return of another school year with the International Museum of Art & Science and BMP Radio’s Back to School Bash on Saturday August 21, 2010 from 10am - 4pm . This event is will offer FREE Admission and is open to the public. With a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, games, free giveaways, storytelling, face painting and magicians, celebrating Back to School has never been so much fun!

But wait! There’s more - Meet and have your picture taken with the Killer Bees and Vipers mascots and players. Take a bite out of crime with McGruff the Dog, or have your fingerprints taken by the McAllen Police Department. And make sure to visit the McAllen Fire Department as they educate parents and children on safety procedures and much more. And parents never go home empty handed, so make sure to take home valuable information from participating sponsors.

Be sure to take advantage of this special opportunity to experience all the exhibits on display at the International Museum of Art & Science, including "Genome: The Secret of How Life Works" exhibit which is FREE for this special day only!

TxDOT Construction Underway at S 10th & Expressway 83

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close underneath the US 83 Overpass on South 10th Street in McAllen to perform bridge repair and maintenance, Monday through Thursday, August 16-19 and August 23rd-26th from 9 pm to 6 am each night. US 83 westbound and eastbound Frontage Roads at 10th Street will remain open. Northbound and Southbound traffic on 10th Street will need to use the Frontage Road to access the next available intersection to proceed North or South.

Sales Tax Holiday This Friday Through Sunday

Texas’ annual Sales Tax Holiday arrives this weekend, just in time for families to save money on clothes and supplies for the new school year.

“This is the 12th straight year in which families will take advantage of sales tax savings,” Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said. “This Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20–22, shoppers can stock up on tax-free school supplies, school backpacks and most children’s and adults’ clothing and shoes priced at less than $100.”

Allegiant Air To Be Cashless At All Airports

Allegiant Air has announced that effective September 1st, 2010, Allegiant Air ticket counter representatives at the McAllen International Airport and all locations throughout the United States will no longer accept cash payment for ticket sales or fees.

While the majority of fees due at the airport are able to be collected by obtaining the customers' permission to charge the card on file from the purchase of the original itinerary, fees may be paid at the counter by providing another credit or debit card.

Allegiant Air offers non-stop service from McAllen to Las Vegas at least 5 times per week and seasonal service from McAllen to Orlando, Florida.
