Vipers Kick Off Hoops Against Hunger This Week

MCALLEN, TEXAS – The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Action 4 News and Clear Channel Radio (KTEX 100.3, Wild 104, The X 105.5, Hot Kiss 106.3) announced Monday that Hoops Against Hunger, in which four non-perishable food items can be donated at the State Farm Arena doors in exchange for a free ticket to select Vipers weekday home games, returns for its third season on Wednesday when the Vipers face the New Mexico Thunderbirds at 7:00 p.m.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Wednesday’s food donations will benefit the Food Bank RGV. Additionally, donations to games on February 2, February 16, March 15 and March 23 will also benefit the Food Bank RGV.

The Vipers will also have six games in which food donations will benefit the Salvation Army: December 20, January 18, January 19, February 1, March 14 and March 21.

“The Salvation Army’s largest fundraising period is the holiday season is from Thanksgiving to Christmas eve, where we raise not only food, clothing, and toys for needy families but the majority of the funds used to provide all of our programs and services here in Hidalgo county for the entire year. But that’s only possible because the generous support of individual donors and concerned corporate partners, like the Vipers, who conduct special campaigns benefitting The Salvation Army, giving Hidalgo county residents a wide range of choices when it comes to supporting their neighbors in need,” Major Dan Ford of the Salvation Army said.

The Vipers collected, on average, about 300 pounds of food during each game in which they had a food drive last season.

“We can’t thank our fans enough for stepping up and helping out those in need over the last two years, and we hope that it will continue this year. One of our goals it to bounce out hunger in the Rio Grande Valley, and we know that is a goal that we can achieve together,” Vipers President Bert Garcia said.

Vipers Open Title Defense With Win

The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers opened up their title defense with a 123-115 win over the Texas Legends on Thursday at State Farm Arena in front of a crowd of 5,382.

Terrel Harris got off to a hot start for the Vipers (1-0), hitting a pair of threes and a lay-up to keep the Vipers even with the Legends (0-1). Harris hit three three-pointers in the fourth quarter as well to help the Vipers pull away, finishing with 19 points.

The Vipers trailed for much of the first half, but Richard Roby hit a pair of free throws to give the Vipers a 58-57 lead with 1:40 remaining in the second quarter.

Roby led all scorers with 31 points on 12-of-20 shooting, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc. He also had eight rebounds.

The Vipers jumped out to an 82-73 lead in the third quarter. After the Legends climbed to within two points at 85-83, Mickell Gladness came alive, scoring eight points in the final 2:42 to give the Vipers a 95-87 lead after tipping in a missed shot at the buzzer.

Gladness recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.

The Legends were led by Justin Dentmon, who scored 12 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc. Antonio Daniels scored 19 points with seven rebounds and seven assists while Kelvin Lewis finished with 18 points and six assists.

The Vipers return to action on Saturday, November 27 at 12:00 p.m. when they face the Austin Toros at the Cedar Park Center.

Vipers Open Title Defense at 7:00 p.m.

The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers open the season against the Texas Legends at 7:00 p.m. at State Farm Arena.

Special pre-game ceremonies to raise 2010 NBA Development League Championship Banner and hand out Championship rings.

The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive replica championship banners, courtesy of Lone Star National Bank.

The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive schedule key tags, courtesy of Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Pre-game tailgate party in the State Farm Arena parking lot, courtesy of Pepper's at Uptown, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Houston Rockets Hall of Fame Mascot Clutch the Bear and the Rockets Power Dancers will perform.

The game will be broadcast live nationally on VERSUS (Time Warner Cable channel 314 (SD)/1314 (HD), Dish Network channel 151 and DirecTV channel 603). Fans are encouraged to wear red.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Vipers Finalize Opening Night Roster

MCALLEN – The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced Wednesday that they have finalized their opening night roster follow the waiving of guard/forward Ramon Harris (6-7, 219, Kentucky).

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers are the NBA Development League affiliate of the NBA Houston Rockets. The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA’s official minor league whose teams have direct affiliations to NBA franchises. For the 2010-11 season, the league will feature 16 teams – including the debut of the Texas Legends. A proven developer of talent, 20 percent of players in the NBA at the conclusion of the 2009-10 season boasted NBA D-League experience, while the league continues to develop coaches, referees, and front-office staff for the NBA and its teams. In fostering the league’s connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote health and wellness, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs. The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA. Vipers to Host Championship Banner and Ring Ceremony Before Home Opener Thursday

MCALLEN, TEXAS – The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced Wednesday that they will be dropping the 2010 NBA Development League championship banner and handing out the championship rings during a special pre-game ceremony beginning at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday at State Farm Arena.

The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive replica championship banners, courtesy of Lone Star National Bank. The first 4,000 fans in attendance will receive Vipers schedule key tags, courtesy of Academy Sports + Outdoors.

Doors open at 6:00 p.m.

Houston Rockets Hall of Fame mascot Clutch the Bear and the Rockets Power Dancers will perform. There will also be a free pre-game tailgate party in the State Farm Arena parking lot beginning at 4:30 p.m., courtesy of Pepper’s at Uptown.

The game will be broadcast live nationally on VERSUS (Time Warner Cable channel 314 (SD)/1314 (HD), Dish Network channel 151 and DirecTV channel 603). Fans are encouraged to wear red.

The Vipers are facing the Texas Legends, with tip-off schedule to occur shortly after the conclusion of the championship ceremony.
